What makes a porta potty ADA accessible?
Size and clearance, mostly. Under ADA Standards section 304.3.1, the unit needs a 60 inch diameter turning circle inside so a wheelchair user can turn around without backing out the door. The doorway itself has to clear 32 inches per section 404.2.3, wider than the 27 or so inches on a standard unit. Grab bars, a raised seat height, and a lowered toilet paper holder round it out. Reach ranges matter too: section 308.2.1 caps a forward reach at 48 inches high and 15 inches low, which is why the paper dispenser and any shelf sit lower in an ADA unit than in a standard porta potty rental. Door hardware has to work with a closed fist, not a pinch or twist, under section 309.4. None of this is optional trim. How many ADA units do I need?
Start with your total unit count, then apply the 5 percent rule. ADA Standards section 213.2 says that where single-user portable units are clustered, at least 5 percent of them must be accessible, and never fewer than one. A construction crew renting four standard porta potty rental units for a Columbus jobsite still needs one accessible unit in that group, because the "never fewer than one" clause overrides the percentage on small counts. Toilet counts themselves come from a separate rule: OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) sets 1 toilet per 20 workers or fewer, then 1 toilet and 1 urinal per 40 workers as headcount climbs past that, and 1 per 50 once a site hits 200 or more. Where do ADA units need to go on site?
Placement has to satisfy two things: the ground under the unit and the path to it. ADA Standards section 302.1 requires the floor and ground surface to be stable, firm, and slip resistant, which rules out loose gravel or soft turf as a pad. The approach route needs that same 36 inch clear width from section 403.5.1, running from parking or the sidewalk to the unit door without a curb in the way. If the grade forces a ramp, section 405.2 caps the slope at 1:12, roughly one inch of rise per foot of run. On a site near Bexley, 6.2 miles southeast of downtown Columbus, or out toward Upper Arlington at 6.9 miles northwest, that often means a plywood or aggregate pad laid before delivery day, not something worked out after the truck shows up. Do all my restrooms need to be ADA units?
No. Only the accessible share has to meet ADA Standards section 213.2, the 5 percent minimum with one unit as the floor. The rest of your bank can be standard porta potty rental units or a mix that includes a restroom trailer rental if the event calls for something nicer. A 4 stall restroom trailer, for instance, typically includes at least one ADA-compliant stall built in, which can satisfy the ratio without a separate standalone unit. For construction crews, OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) still governs your total count regardless of accessibility status, so run that math first, then layer the ADA percentage on top. How wide does the doorway need to be on an ADA porta potty?

Often yes. Section 213.2's floor is one unit minimum regardless of size, so a small gathering with two or three total restrooms usually satisfies the rule with a single accessible unit in the group.
